Custom Dimensions

Create dimensions from contact custom fields:

Setting Up

  1. Go to Account Settings > Reporting
  2. Click Add Dimension
  3. Select a custom field
  4. Name the dimension
  5. Save

Example: State

If contacts have a state field:
  1. Add dimension: “State”
  2. Field: state
  3. Reports can now break down by state

Cardinality

Dimensions work best with:
  • Low cardinality (few unique values)
  • Meaningful groupings
  • Complete data
Examples:
  • ✅ State (50 values)
  • ✅ Plan type (3 values)
  • ❌ Email (too many unique values)

Using Dimensions in Reports

Performance Report

  1. Go to Reports > Performance
  2. Select dimension from dropdown
  3. View metrics broken down

Example Output

By State:
California: 10,000 sends, 12% click rate, $2,400 revenue
Texas: 8,000 sends, 11% click rate, $1,760 revenue
Florida: 6,000 sends, 13% click rate, $1,560 revenue

Dimension Coverage

Not all contacts may have data for a dimension:
State dimension:
- Has value: 85%
- Missing: 15%
Missing values appear as “(not set)” in reports.

Improving Coverage

  • Require field at signup
  • Enrich data from external sources
  • Default values for common cases

Multi-Dimensional Analysis

Combine dimensions for deeper analysis:
Date + Creative:
Shows how each creative performed each day
Note: More dimensions = more rows = slower reports.

Dimension Refresh

Custom dimension stats are calculated periodically:
  • Coverage percentage
  • Unique value count
  • Last updated timestamp
Click Refresh to recalculate.

Best Practices

Date, Creative, Offer cover most needs. Add custom only when needed.
Dimensions with 50+ values become hard to analyze. Group values if needed.
Dimensions are only as useful as the underlying data. Validate custom fields.
